We are seeking a Chief Scientist to lead our overall science function and provide the strategic direction and scientific underpinnings for our campaigns.

The Chief Scientist will be responsible for ensuring that Oceana's policy initiatives are founded on the best and most current scientific understanding and effectively translating complex technical materials in a clear compelling manner for decision-makers, the media, and the public.  The Chief Scientist will also develop and oversee the activities of Oceana’s Science Advisory Board, a group of distinguished marine scientists committed to assisting Oceana in its mission; and maintain a network of scientists able to provide informal assistance to Oceana in a variety of ways.  The Chief Scientist serves as a member of the Executive Committee, leads Oceana’s global science team, and directly supervises a staff of three. 

Qualifications

A track record of success in effectively managing in an advocacy, government agency, legislature, or similar policymaking organization is essential; strategic planning and budget development experience must be demonstrated as well.  Substantial knowledge of ocean science and policy issues with proven ability to lead a professional staff, direct complex programs and effect policy change is a must.  The candidate must also possess experience in media relations and public speaking, plus exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.  A PhD degree in a related field plus 10 years professional experience is required, and a strong commitment to marine protection is essential.  Spanish fluency a plus.  Travel will be required and salary is commensurate with experience.  Oceana offers an excellent benefits package.
